The 1887 Diocese of Cebu and its officials

The book “BREVE RESENA de lo qu fue y de lo que es la DIOCESIS DE CEBU en las Islas Filipinas” written by Father Felipe Sendino Redondo in 1886 (translated into English in 2014 by Azucena L. Pace) notes of the officials of the diocese:

The Bishop of the Diocese of Cebu was the Most Illustrious and Reverend Fray Martin Garcia Alcocer y Dominguez of the Franciscan Order. At that time, the Diocese of Cebu practically covered all the provinces of Visayas and Mindanao.

Bishop Alcocer was preconized at the Consistorial of their Excellencies of the Cardinals on June 7, 1886; consecrated on October 26; took possession of this Bishopric on December 11 of the same year. He arrived in the City of Cebu and his solemn entry on January 5, 1887.

The Secretary of the Chamber and Government was Presbyter D. Basilio Tecson Chaplains of Solio.

The Eccelesiastical Court was headed by the Provisor and Vicar General, Dr. D. Angel Ma. Diaz Vasuez, its Fiscal Promoter, Presbyter D. Felip Redondo y Sendino and Notary was Presbyter D. Pablo Singson.

The Concilar Seminary of San Carlos at that time was managed by the Fathers of the Congregation of St. Vincent of Paul.

Fr. Francisco Jarero, was its Director and Lector of Dogma, Fr. Pedro Julia was its Vice-Rector and Lector of Moral Theology, Fr. Narciso Villa was its Lector, 2nd and 3rd year of Grammar. The other professors: Fr. Tomas Gonzales and Fr. Juan Villa.

The Cleric Seminarians acted as Teachers of Primary Instruction while the Steward of the Seminary was Bro. Valeriano Alvarez.

The book notes that the boarders and day pupils of all classes numbered approximately 500, including those of primary grades.

When General Miguel Lopez de Legaspi arrived in Cebu on April 27, 1565, he brought with him, to give him counsel and doctrine as well as to administer the Holy Sacraments, six members of the Augustinian religious: Prior and Prelate: Fr. Andres de Urdaneta, FRs. Martin de Rada, Diego de Herrera, Andres de Aguirre, Lorenzo Jimenez and Pedro de Gamboa. Fr. Lorenzo Jimenez, met his death shortly before embarking at the Port of Natividad in 1564.
