VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

If a media colleague could be shot dead in broad daylight, then the same incident could happen to anyone. Much more to politicians. Last Sunday, Mayor Ronald "Sampol" Tirol of Buenavista, Bohol, was shot dead by unidentified assailants while he was inside a cockpit. The attempt was not new, as he was already threatened a couple of years back. This time the perpetrator was keen and made sure that he killed his target. Little did they know that there is an adverse effect in the death of a town mayor who is also the town's father.

Is our country not safe for anyone anymore? I do not like to think so but honestly it already feels like it. The streets which we used to enjoy before are now places we should avoid because something untoward might happen. There is not enough security when you go out at night, much more in broad daylight. Well, we cannot even blame the police if they cannot give us the sense of security we want. They have admitted that they are outnumbered compared to the country's population. There are some crimes that we cannot avoid, but to some extent measures can be done.

Why is a person's life so cheap for others? I have heard stories of people who work as guns for hire and just take a life for a couple of bucks. When they think that you are not good enough, you could be gone with the snap of a finger. Our faith should tell us that we value the sanctity of life, but with these crimes going on I fear that we have forgotten this already. It's hard to answer the question on what it would take for trust to come back to an ordinary person like me.

It would be the saddest day in history when we can just kill someone with a bullet. If you liked the recent installment of the Avengers, the picture close to the last scene could possibly happen to the Philippines. Lives are gone for the greater good: An ideology that seems to be very stupid and lame. We need to step up our game in the way we handle conflicts and competition. No way is a simple squabble worth a life.

Once the act is done, it becomes hard for the authorities to investigate thoroughly. I feel sorry for the families who lost someone by heinous crime. If only time could take it all back. Should we be wary of our own safety? It could be a yes and no. While we should also be making sure that we are okay, the authorities should always be around the perimeter.

The town of Buenavista is torn on the loss of their mayor. God only knows who else will be taken down. This has to stop. Firearms weren't created to destroy lives. It can protect, but using them in exchange of a couple of thousands to bring someone down is another story.
