Misamis, District of Mindanao

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

Centuries ago, Mindanao used to be part of the Diocese of Cebu and was called the District of Mindanao. There was a Royal Decree on September 10, 1861 declaring that the Society of Jesus had the exclusive right to establish and develop successively the existing missions in Mindanao.

Misamis was composed of Lubungan (created in 1870 separating it from its mother parish Dapitan), Dapitan (their patron saint is the Apostle St. James the Elder, it was administered by the Augustinian-Recollect Fathers until 1870, when it was again administered by the Society of Jesus), Langaran (it was a town separated from Jimenez), Oroquieta (presently the capital of the Province of Misamis Occidental, it was separated from Jimenez), Jimenez or Palihan (erected in 1859 under the patronage of St. John the Baptist), Misamis (now known as Ozamiz, under the patronage of the Immaculate Concepcion of Our Lady of the Virgin Mary), Iligan (now the capital of the Province of Lanao del Norte, created as a parish in 1856, under the patronage of St. Michael Archangel, separated from its mother parish, Misamis), Alubijid (created on November 18, 1865 under the patronage of the Finding of the Cross, the missionary priest used to reside in a place called El Salvador), Iponan (erected on October 18, 1851 under the patronage of San Guillermo (St. William), Cagayan (under the patronage of St. Augustine ), Jasaan and Balingasag (erected as parish on November 3, 1849 under the patronage of St. Rita of Cassia).

Misamis was divided into two in 1929 but its implementation was carried out only in 1939, creating the Provinces of Misamis Occidental and Oriental. From 1916 to 1935, Misamis was part of the 11th Senatorial District, the other provinces composing it are Bohol and Surigao. The Senators elected from the district were Nicolas Capistrano, Francisco Soriano, Troadio Galicano (of Carcar, Cebu), Juan Torralba (of Bohol) and Jose A. (Aniceto) Clarin (son of Don Aniceto Velez Clarin, first civilian Governor of Bohol and of Parian, Cebu, the town in Misamis called Clarin is named after Senator Jose Clarin).

Those who served as Governors of Misamis were Cayetano Pacaña (1898-1899), Jose Casa Roa (1899-1901), Manuel Roa Corrales (1901-1905), Apolinar Velez (1906-1909), Ricardo Barrientos Reyes (1910-1912), Jose Barrientos Reyes (1912-1916), Juan Roa, Segundo Gaston and Don Gregorio A. Pelaez (1929).
