The Writers of Carcar, Cebu (Part 2)

Vicente B. Alcoseba. Born in Carcar in 1859 and died in 1938. Pursued to study Law in Hong Kong after going to the Colegio de San Carlos. Wrote articles in the Ang Suga of Don Vicente Sotto, Bag-ong Kusog of Don Vicente Rama, and The FREEMAN of Don Paulino Gullas. He wrote more than 20 plays and the zarzuelas "Paz," "Saloma," and "Ang Katapusang Hinabang." Before his death he served as Justice of the Peace of Moalboal. A namesake was appointed by President Sergio Osmeña Sr. as Acting Vice Mayor of Carcar on January 4, 1946. Vicente wrote the story: "Ang Kamatayon ni Leon Kilat" in 1925. The story reveals that it was a Katipunero from Carcar by the name of Apolinario Alcuitas who assassinated the KKK Cebu's leader, Gen. Leon Kilat, whose real name was Pantaleon Villegas of Bacong, Negros Oriental. The assassin was the son of Julio Roca Alcuitas. Leon Kilat was killed on April 8, 1898.

VICENTE ALCOVER. Born in Carcar in 1907. He earned his basic education in Minglanilla and his college degree at the Southwestern University (founded by a Carcaranon, the wife of Aznar was a Barcenilla). In 1951 he became Principal Director of St. Peter's Academy in Alegria (the school still exists today, situated in Barangay Poblacion, headed by Dr. Gilbert Magallon, whose wife served as Mayor of Alegria, Cebu). Alcover also became Principal of St. Thomas Academy in Siargao, Surigao. He also served as Councilor of Carcar in 1938.

EPIFANIO ALFAFARA. Born in 1882 and died in 1933. He was the philosophical poet and writer-politician of Carcar. He was Municipal President of Carcar during the American Occupation, he succeeded Mariano Mercado and in turn was succeeded by Constancio Gantuangco. He translated the Twelve Pairs of France, in Cebuano "Ang Doce Pares sa Pransiya" in 1930. He finished Law at the University of San Carlos.

SERGIO ALFAFARA. The son of Municipal President Epifanio Alfafara. He was born on July 27, 1920 and became a priest and was later assigned as the parish priest of Tabunok, Talisay, Cebu. His counterpart parish priest of Talisay was Rt. Rev. Msgr. Juan Boltron. He was editor of the Ang Lungsoranon, a Catholic publication founded by Archbishop Gabriel M. Reyes. Its first issue was released in 1934. Others who served as the editor of the Ang Lungsoranon were Bartolome Cortes, Diosdado Camomot, Bienvenido Tudtud, Cesar Alcoseba, Napoleon Rama, Sincero Lucero, and Pastor Ybañez. (To be continued)
