The uncorrected street names of Cebu (Part 1)
It is not only the Eduardo Aboitiz street renaming ordinance that was uncorrected. In its case after 30 years (ordinance approved on November 9, 1987, finally corrected on July 19, 2017). CEBUpedia advocated for the correction of streets that have been renamed by ordinances aside from Eduardo Aboitiz Street (formerly Lopez Jaena). Two other streets (though there are many others) should be corrected:
1.) Gov. Jose Leyson Street - It is the street known as Progreso in Carbon area. The street renaming ordinance was approved on August 5, 1971 contained under City Ordinance No. 720. The honoree is one of the martyr governors of Cebu, Jose Leyson, who became a lawyer on November 5, 1923, elected as Board Member of Cebu together with Fructuoso Cabahug on December 10, 1940. He married Lourdes Velez and had the following children: Jose Jr., Fe, Josefina, Esperanza, Caridad, and Gabriel. He was forced by the Japanese to sit as Governor of Cebu but was eventually executed for his loyalty to Cebu and its people. CEBUpedia wrote an article on this and appealed to city officials for its correction/unveiling, hoping that soon, by this year the street sign marker of Jose Leyson will be unveiled after 46 years.
2.) Gabriel "Flash" Elorde - It is the street known as "Gansiang" in Go Chan Subdivision. The street renaming ordinance, City Ordinance No. 1182, was approved on January 14, 1985. The honoree is Gabriel Elorde the Cebuano Boxing Legend.
CEBUpedia wrote a letter to the Cebu City Council twice, a letter to the mayor in 2014 and CITOM Board also in 2014, appealing that the street signs of these three be corrected, with one, Eduardo Aboitiz, the first to be corrected.
There are many other streets in Cebu City that bear the incorrect street names, another example is Jazmin Street in Capitol Site. Let it be clarified that the flower-named streets in Capitol Site have long been renamed by City Ordinance No. 635 approved on September 10, 1968, that is why Sampaguita Street is now Don Pedro Rodriguez, Waling Waling is now Don Celestino Rodriguez, Adelfa Street is now Julio Llorente, Kamuning Street is now Gov. Manuel Roa and Orchid Street is now Gov. Arsenio Climaco. Jazmin Street is now Don Filemon Sotto Street but was corrected as there is another street named after him (the one along the INC Church), the Cebu City Council enacted City Ordinance No. 973 approved on July 5, 1977 renaming the street to Nicloas Rafols, delegate of the 1934 Constitutional Convention, Congressman of the old 6th District of Cebu, and a historical novelist. CEBUpedia featured an article on Rafols Street on December 9, 2013, appealing to city officials to correct the error. It is high time that it should be corrected this year or next. The Cultural, Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC) is allowed to unveil four street names every year, if it exceeds (CEBupedia suggested that after Leyson Street, Elorde should follow), perhaps the mayor would intervene and maybe the Nicolas Rafols Street may be unveiled this year.
