Life's little reminder

READERS' VIEWS - Henry L. Yu, M.D. - The Freeman

How often do we hear or see people change their ways of life once they have become the rich and the famous?

They - who are lured by fame and fortune and all the material things in this world… They - who tend to put their power and wealth in their head to the point of dismissing the reality that they don't actually own anything in this world… They - who tend to forget the fact that the so-called personal properties that they claim to be theirs are just material things being loaned to them...

Well, these are the people who tend to forget the fact that as human beings, they are all but passing visitors on a limited tourist visa, who will one day go back to where they came from as in “from ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”

As they didn't bring anything with them when they came into this world except for their shrill cry that signaled life, they also won't be bringing with them anything when they go back home. Not any of those trophies and plaques of recognition, not any of those favorite books, apparels, diamonds and all that glitter and glam.

Day by day, let us remind ourselves not to be like them…

Rather, as mortal human beings, let us strive to remain humble all the days of our lives, to be more considerate, compassionate, patient, kind, understanding, and be thankful to God for all the blessings He has given us. Let us pray and ask Him to remind us about the real purpose of life and living, every time we tend to neglect and forget the simple facts of life. Day by day, let us pray and ask God to help us become the better person that He has designed us to be.

As one song would put it: “Day by day, oh Lord, three things I pray: To see Thee clearly, love Thee more dearly, follow Thee more nearly, day by day…”
