Calmana lawyer tops IBP-Cebu online chess tourney

CEBU, Philippines —  Sherily Cua of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Calmana Chapter (Caloocan, Marikina, and Navotas) emerged as champion in the Lawyer edition of the A Lawyer’s Gambit:IBP-Cebu Online Chess Tournament Season 2 held over the weekend on lichess platform.

Cua tallied 8.0 points, enough for her to claim the top spot of the virtual tilt spearheaded by IBP-Cebu under the leadership of Cheryl Palacao-Condat in association with the Toledo City Chess Club and the Toledo Trojans.

Fernando Tanglao of IBP-Eastern Samar wound up solo second with 7.5 points.

Jeah Jean Gacang and Richard Abangan, Jr. of IBP-Cebu and Borgy Alava of IBP-Manila figured in a three-way tie with 6.0 points each but Gacang, the Trojans’ top female player in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP), took the third place honors by virtue of a superior tiebreaker. Alava finished fourth followed by Abangan.

Junnel Tinio of IBP-Pampanga came out sixth with 5.5 points. Rupert T. Del Rosario of IBP-PPLM, Reddy Balarbar of IBP-Pangasinan, Manuel Zosimo Ozao of IBP-Cebu City, and Edgar Calacar of IBP-Bohol rounded up the top 10 with 5.0 points each.

Meanwhile, the organizers are gearing up for their Junior edition, which is open to pawnpushers aged 17 years old and below on August 8. — EBV
