Cordova, Toledo notch back-to-back victories in GM Wesley So Cup

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors and the Toledo City Trojans both came up with a double victory as action intensifies in the GM Wesley So Cup, the reinforced conference of the 1st Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament played last Wednesday night on lichess platform.

Behind the tactical plays of Israeli Grandmaster Nitzan Steinberg, National Masters Merben Roque and Mario Magubat, and Woman International Master Bernadette Galas, the Dagami Warriors of PCAP vice chairman Ariel Potot edged the Cagayan Chess Kings and the Caloocan Loadmanna Knights via a similar 11.5-9.5 decision.

Cordova thus earned still a share of the Southern Division lead with the Camarines Soaring Eagles on identical 12-1 win-loss records.

On the other hand, the France-based Iranian GM Amir Bagheri and IM Rico Mascarinas-led Trojans downed the Rizal Batch Towers, 14-7, before slaying the Quezon City Simba’s tribe, 13.5-7.5.

The Trojans now hold a 10-3 slate to stay at joint third and fourth spots with the Iloilo Kisela Knights.

It was a completely different story for the other Cebu teams in Lapu-Lapu Naki Warriors and Cebu City Machers who suffered a double whammy.

The Naki Warriors bowed to the Laguna Heroes, 4.5-16.5, and  the Isabela Knight Raiders, 5-16, while the Machers were dumped by Caloocan, 4-17, and the Antipolo Cobras, 3-18. Lapu-Lapu dropped to 5-8 while Cebu City absorbed its 10th defeat in 13 matches.
