Charity fun run to kick off UV Centennial celebration

CEBU, Philippines — The year-round University of the Visayas (UV) Centennial Celebration will kick off with a fun run for a cause on January 12 next year.

This was announced by UV President Eduardo "Eddiegul" R. Gullas and his brother, UV Executive Vice President Jose "Dodong" R. Gullas during the formal launching of the official logo and calendar of activities relative to the school's 100th founding anniversary bannered by the theme, "UV:A Century of Love and Service to Humanity".

The race date coincides with the birthday of the late Don Vicente A. Gullas, who founded UV as the Visayan Institute way back in 1919.

"Why running? We have a lot of activities ahead and we want to start with something that would energize us," said UV Athletic Director Cris Mejarito. "This fun run is open to all. We are inviting everyone to join because this is for the Cebuano community."

Race director Joel Baring said they are expecting at least 5,000 runners, mostly students and alumni of UV, to take part in the fund-raising event that features the 3K, 5K, and 10K distances.

"Proceeds of the Centennial Run will go to our adopted barangay under our community extension program especially in providing scholarships to poor but deserving students," said Atty. Darling Chyrmyth Wages, co-chairperson of the UC Centennial Celebration.

Aside from medals and certificates, over P70,000 in cash prize will be given away to the winners in each category.

Registration fee is pegged at P250 for the 3K, P350 for the 5K and P450 for the 10K inclusive of a singlet, race bib, refreshments and freebies. (FREEMAN)
