15th Thirsty bootfest kicks off today

CEBU, Philippines — The 15th edition of the Thirsty Cup, one of the sought-after football events in the Queen City of the South,  kicks off today at the Cebu City Sports Center.

A total of 234 teams, including 93 out-of-towners and 17 schools, will be seeing action in the three-day tilt that features 14 categories.

For today, only three divisions will be played, the boys under-15, men’s 38-above and mixed open.

Sixteen teams are vying for supremacy in the boys 19, and 10 each in the men’s 38-above and mixed open.

On Saturday, 10 teams will mix it up in the mixed under-7, 21 in the under-9, 28 in the mixed under-11, 24 in the boys 13, six in the girls 15, and nine in the girls 19.

The premiere men’s open also starts tomorrow with 36 teams spread into eight groups trying to outdo each. Action continues on Sunday together with the boys 15, boys 17 and ladies open.

To spice up this weekend’s action, the event organizers have invited the University of the Visayas (UV) pep squad to cheer the players on the field.

The participants are advised to be at the venue at least two hours ahead of their first scheduled game since games will be played one after the other to avoid late night matches.
