Bantayan, Samboan claim q'final berths in Gov. Cup

CEBU, Philippines - Bantayan unleashed a furious second-quarter offensive to blow away San Remigio, 113-67, and clinch the remaining quarterfinal spot in North Division Bracket 3 of the 2017 Cebu Governor’s Cup Under-21 Inter-Cities and Municipalities Basketball Tournament at the Medellin Sports Complex last Friday night.

In the other match, Medellin pulled off a crucial 107-84 victory that denied Madridejos a spot to the next round.

Bantayan and Medelllin finished the elimination round with identical 3-2 win-loss records but the Bantayanons earned the right to join the undefeated Bogo City (5-0) in the quarters by virtue of a simple tie.

Bantayan led by just seven after the first period, 24-17 but dropped a 32-13 bomb to rip the game apart at halftime, 56-30. The islanders then closed the match with a 29-12 bang to seal the 46-point obliteration.

Renz Juniel Ugbaniel topped five Bantayan cagers in double figures with 20 points. John Ray Caracena scored 14, Marc Steven Ursal chipped in with 13 markers, while John Christian Quiamco and Joshua Renz Ortiz had 21 points in between them.

Jeroel Pedroza had 15 points, while Guinevere Amit, Isagani Asingua and Jasher Cabague finished with 10 points each for San Remigio, which bowed out winless in five games

Down South, Ginatilan and Oslob bested separate foes to create a three-way tie with Samboan for the second place in South Division Bracket 2.

Ginatilan subdued Santander 86-72, while Oslob tamed Boljoon 94-71 to join Samboan at the second spot with similar 4-2 cards.

However, the Olympic tie-breaker rule no longer applies in this situation as Samboan defeated both Ginatilan and Oslob in their previous meetings to take the remaining quarterfinal berth in Bracket S2.

Dalaguete, on the other, capped its winning run with a 96-58 thrashing of Alcoy to proceed into the next stage with a 5-1 slate. — EBV (FREEMAN)
