Yamyamin tops CEPCA’s April tourney

CEBU, Philippines - Rosendo Yamyamin settled for a draw with chess tutor Peterson Sia in the final round and that was all he needed to win the April edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association monthly tournament last Sunday at Handuraw Cafe along Gorordo Avenue, this city.

Before fighting to a stalemate with Sia, Yamyamin rammed his way to victories over Jun Kidlat, Amado Olea, Carlo Maraat, and Reynaldo Flores to finish the 5-round Swiss system competition with the highest score of 4.5 points.

Aside from pocketing P1,500, Yamyamin also earned a ticket to the "Battle of Champions" this December alongside early qualifiers Jimmy Ty, Jr., the defending grand champion, Mario Mangubat, and Tony Cabibil.

A former top collegiate standout from the University of San Jose-Recoletos, Yamyamin currently works as branch manager of Gopel Finance based in Ormoc City.

For the most latest CEPCA action, Maraat landed at second place, while the next three spots were occupied by Sia, lawyer Jong Melendez, and Flores. Maraat received P1,000 for his effort, while Sia got P500.

The prizes were donated by former CEPCA president Rolando "Jojo" Muralla. — (FREEMAN)
