Man charged for spreading video

Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A 23-year-old man who was arrested last month has been charged before the court for allegedly publishing and disseminating photos of a sex video with his ex-girlfriend in social media and to one of their friends.

Prosecutor Simaco Labata held accused, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the complainant, for trial after finding probable cause.

Labata also recommended P42,000 for his temporary liberty for violation of Republic Act 9995 or the Anti-photo and Video Voyeurism Act in relation to Section 6 of RA 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

During inquest proceedings, the accused, a resident of Cebu City, chose not to undergo further proceeding. Instead, he manifested to answer the charges in court.

The victim, a 21-year-old woman living in Mandaue City, said in her sworn statement that in January 2019 her ex-boyfriend communicated with her, allegedly threatening to upload photos of their sex videos to social media, if she will not give in to his demands to have sex with him.

The complainant bargained to delete the videos, but instead the accused posted photos of their sex video in social media, she said.

Because of the continued threats, she asked the help of the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit-7.

Later, the complainant together and the operatives went to the house of the accused. While they were talking, she signaled the police who then arrested the suspect.

The complainant and the accused were in a relationship for almost two years before they broke up. (FREEMAN)
