Mactan air base hangar  projects break ground

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The construction of the P188 million Rotary Hangar and Fixed Wing Hangar broke ground recently at the Brigadier General Benito Ebuen Air Base in Lapu-Lapu City.

Lapu-Lapu City Representative Cindi King-Chan graced the occasion as the guest of honor. She was joined by her husband, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard "Ahong" Chan and several city councilors.

Mayor Chan has expressed profound gratitude, highlighting the significance of these projects as valuable additions to the world-class facilities at the said air base.

The mayor emphasized that the hangars would function as maintenance bays for aircraft engines, ensuring optimal conditions and enhancing Air Force operations.

According to the mayor, these two essential infrastructure convergence projects align with the Tatag ng Imprastraktura para sa Kapayapaan at Seguridad (TIKAS) convergence program for CY 2023, a joint initiative of the Department of National Defense and the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Lapu-Lapu City was selected as one of the beneficiaries.

Rep. King-Chan said that the construction of new air units aims to support law enforcement, improve disaster response (as demonstrated during super typhoons Yolanda and Odette), enhance rescue operations, and contribute to the island's security.

“We are fortunate recipients of these two projects, crucial for bolstering our Air Force’s operational readiness through improved facilities," the lady legislator said.

She emphasized the strategic importance of the said air base in safeguarding the region, upholding sovereignty, and ensuring territorial integrity.

“Moreover, these developments will significantly contribute to our nation’s social and economic progress, reinforcing national peace and security," she added.

The construction of these projects is projected for completion by March of next year.

The event was also attended by DPWH Region-7 regional director, Engr. Ernesto Gregorio Jr., Cebu 6th District Engineering Office chief, Engr. Daisy Toledo; Jonathan Quirante of Quirante Construction Inc.; Air Mobility Command commander, Major General Joannis Leonardi Dimaano, and Tactical Operations Wing Central Wing Commander Brigadier General Ramil Oloroso, Brigadier Generals Llewilyn Banaag, Federico Enriquez, and Pablo Rustria, as well as deputy commanders, directors, and members of the local media. — (FREEMAN)
