City intensifies watch against litters

CEBU, Philippines — Violators of illegal disposal of garbage, littering, and other related matters that affect the cleanliness in Cebu City have been warned.

The city government via the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) has briefed Barangay Environmental Officers regarding their functions and authority to penalize violators of city ordinances concerning the environment and garbage.

The BEO is also expected to intensify its monitoring on the “no segregation, no collection,” vandalizing, littering, and even posting election materials in public areas and trees.

Meanwhile, the Solid Waste Management Summit will push thru this summer.

The city government is looking at 200 stakeholders to join the summit set for three days.

Aside from the garbage disposal, also expected to be tackled in the summit is the issue on landfills, the establishment of material recovery facilities in the barangay, and even the waste-to-energy.

“Naa poy mga sugyot nga gitawag og waste-to-energy pero for discussion pa na siya puhon. Atong target ma-minimize ang atong mga basura nga ilabay sa landfill,” said Engineer Reymarr Hijara of the Office of the Mayor.

More to it, the city is expected to finally come up with the long-overdue Solid Waste Management Plan out of the three-day summit. — GMR (FREEMAN)
