CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Council has declared June 7 of every year a day to commemorate fallen barangay frontliners in the city while battling out with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The declaration is embodied through an approved resolution authored by Liga ng mga Barangay - Cebu City chapter and ex-officio Councilor Franklin Ong last Wednesday.

The death of Pardo barangay captain Manolita “Litang” Abarquez due to pneumonia and COVID-19 on June 7 last year paved the way for this commemoration.

“June 7, 2020 Barangay Poblacion, Pardo, lost a mother. June 7, 2020 Liga ng mga Barangays of Cebu City lost a very active director. June 7, 2020 Cebu City lost a great leader in the barangay. June 7, 2020 I lost a dear friend,” an emotional Ong said in a privilege speech.

Aside from Abaraquez though, Ong also wants the rest of the barangay frontliners who battled out in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic to be honored as well.

Before seeking the City Council’s approval of his resolution, Ong also asked for a moment of silence for the late Abarquez and the rest of the barangay frontliners that Cebu City lost in the pandemic.

“Sakit pamalandungon ang nahitabo ni Kap Litang tungod kay dako ang nawala dili lang sa Poblacion, Pardo lakip na sab sa tibuok Dakbayan sa Sugbo..Dili masukod ang gugma ni Kap Litang alang sa atong mga kaigsoonan sa Poblacion, Pardo. Grabe ang iyang pagserbisyo sa katawhan. Wala siya niundang sa pagtabang hangtud di ni na gyud mada sa iyang lawas,” added Ong.

Aside from that, Ong also went on to recognize the tireless efforts of the barangay captains and its councilmen and other barangay officials, barangay health workers, tanods and even volunteers who helped the city in the fight against COVID-19. — GMR (FREEMAN)
