CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City Councilor James Anthony Cuenco has disclosed that Mayor Edgardo Labella is set to issue an executive order with regard the entry of the traditional public utility jeepneys (TPUJs) from other local government units by the end of the month.

Initially, Cuenco said the pre-COVID routes of these jeepneys will be followed.

“For now, we’re still trying to work out the limits (of the number of jeepneys to be allowed to enter), pero I believe mga 50 percent kadto nila,” said Cuenco.

It was earlier reported that TPUJs coming from the province including the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, will be allowed to enter Cebu City starting this week provided drivers test negative for COVID-19 using the RT-PCR test.

The units also need a special permit to operate from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and certificate of road worthiness from the Land Transportation Office.

Cuenco said the TPUJ drivers and operators will have to undergo the same process the drivers and operators have undergone here in the city.

He said they will need to secure a permit from the city government to be allowed to enter.

Meanwhile, Cuenco said the jeepney drivers and operators in the city are 85 percent compliant with the protocols more than a month after they were allowed to return to the city streets.

“Duna la’y mga incidents like didto sa Talamban nga pipila ka mga units nga paggabii na daw, magsikit-sikit na ang sakay. Butangan daw kuno og bangko didto sa tunga-tunga para additional pa og mga pasahero,” he said.

Cuenco said enforcers were already sent in the area last week to admonish those who will still violate the protocols. —  GMR (FREEMAN)
