Two hurt in fire

CEBU, Philippines — A one-year-old boy and his 54-year-old grandmother, suffered burns after a fire razed their house in Sitio Narra, Barangay Poblacion, Carmen town, last Monday morning.

Authorities said Consuelo Obispo was able to rescue her grandson, Thirdy Prieto, who was inside the house when the fire broke out. She suffered first-degree burns in her back while her grandson sustained second-degree burns in the arm.

They were rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment and are now recuperating from their injuries.

According to Fire Officer 1 Dharlene Mari of the Bureau of Fire and Protection, Thirdy’s parents were out working at the time and he was being looked after by his grandmother.

He said that Obispo, was doing the laundry outside when she noticed smoke coming out from the house and immediately rushed inside to rescue her grandson.

“Naa siya sa gawas nanglaba dihang nakabantay siya sa aso, nisud ni siya kay naa pa man sa sulod ang iyang apo, nahitabo ni before pa naabot ang alarma sa among stasyon,” Mari said.

The fire which started around 7:50 a.m., was blamed on electrical misuse and overloading of electrical appliances.

Firefighters put the fire out completely around 8:45 a.m.

Mari said that three houses, including that of the victims’, were totally burned down while three other houses were damaged. Three cars were also slightly burned.

Total damage was estimated at P80,000.

Mari said the houses were located close to each other and were made of light materials. The fire officer added that the victims’ house, along with the other houses that were burned, were owned by a certain Emeberta Endolos. (FREEMAN)
