2 Koreans nabbed for gambling

CEBU, Philippines — Two Korean nationals were arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation-7 for illegal online gambling last Thursday evening in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City.

Jang Yihyuk, 34, and Do Jongwon, 27, are currently detained at the NBI detention center after being nabbed last Thursday in Villa Aurora Subdivision in Barangay Mabolo.

"May nakuhang mga ebidensya na used for the operation of online gambling. Itong operation na 'to, this was conducted in close coordination with the PAGCOR (Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.). Sila (PAGCOR) ang may authority na mag-determine kung 'yung particular person or establishment are authorized to operate an online gambling," NBI-7 Regional Director Tomas Enrile said.

Various gambling paraphernalia including central processing units, monitors, keyboards, mobile phones, receipts, were seized during the operation.

According to the initial investigation of the NBI, the suspects were using a website where they could take bets for sports events, such as basketball and football.

The suspects were caught red-handed logging in to the website. However, it has yet to be confirmed whether the suspects have administrator access to the website.

Enrile added that PAGCOR have been assisting the NBI in their operations against illegal online gambling. Prior to this operation, a similar one was conducted in Angeles City, Pampanga, just this week.

The two Koreans refused to comment on their arrest.

A case filed for violation of Presidential Decree No. 1602 in relation to Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 were filed against the suspects. —Hannah Joy I. Yana/BRP (FREEMAN)
