CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Councilor Margarita “Margot” Osmeña has declared that she is already retiring from politics after her term would expire next year.

Margot, who is also the first lady of Cebu City, said she is not interested in seeking for higher office in 2019 elections. She refused to elaborate why she prefers to retire from politics.

“I could not tell you why because I never had that plans anyway...I don’t have political ambitions. Absolutely, none,” Margot said.

“There is life outside politics. I do have full of life outside that,” she added.

Margot said that she was grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Cebu City as member of the City Council representing the South District.

“I found out that even in your senior years, you can still learn, as long as you are willing to learn...I am grateful for that opportunity given the chance to learn,” she said.

Although she will be retiring from politics, Margot said she will still be very much around to support her husband, Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who will be seeking re-election next year.

Margot said the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan has already a complete slate but refused to reveal them. She, however, said that all of the party’s candidates are very much qualified.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella will be acting mayor for four days while Tomas is on official trip in Kaohsiung, Taiwan to attend the 2018 Global Harbor City’s Forum.

Margot said her husband is one of the invited guests of the forum.

“Tommy is one of the guests of honor in the opening ceremony of the 2018 Global Harbor City’s Forum,” Margot told reporters.

The convention started last Monday and will end on Thursday. The mayor was accompanied by former councilor Alvin Dizon, who is in charge of the sister cities commission.

While Labella is acting mayor, Councilor David Tumulak will also act as vice mayor. (FREEMAN)
