Road mishap kills 1, injures 12 in Naga

CEBU, Philippines — One person was killed and 12 others were injured after a trailer truck rammed into a passenger multicab in Barangay Inuboran, City of Naga Tuesday afternoon.

The fatality was identified as Daisy Bonita, 46, resident of Barangay San Roque, Talisay City. Bonita died at the hospital few hours after the accident.

“Dinala siya sa hospital during the accident but at night time dineclare siya’ng patay ng doctor, tumawag dito sa police station,” said Chief Insp. Roderick Gonzales, City of Naga Police chief.

The other injured passengers were identified as Clifford Farriola, 24, resident of Bantayan Island, Cebu; Petronilla Omadlao, 49, resident of Barangay South Poblacion, San Fernando, Cebu; Maria Jessa Bastismo, 20, resident of Barangay Cabungahan, City of Naga; Misarque Geraldine, 23, resident of Barangay Pitalo, San Fernando; Charlene Eubank, 31, and Marcelina Baricuatro, 45, both residents of Barangay Langtad, City of Naga; and Maura Nabasca, 53, and Asucena Nabasca, 45, both residents of Barili, Cebu.

There were also four minors injured in the accident. They are now confined in the hospital.

Initial investigation shows that the two vehicles were travelling in the same direction from Carcar City and heading towards Cebu City when the trailer truck rear-ended the multicab causing it to fall into a creek.

“Base sa investigation, binunggo siya (multicab) sa likoran ng truck kaya ay naging cause sa kanyang pagkahulog doon sa may creek kung saan naging cause sa pagkaka-injured ng mga pasahero niya,” Gonzales said.

Truck driver Gilbert Macas Betenio, 46, resident of Barangay Capilan, Carcar City, Cebu is now detained at the Naga City Police Station while criminal charges are being prepared against him. — Patricia Faith T. Santillan, STC Intern/FPL (FREEMAN)
