BI workers ‘unpaid’ for 3 months

CEBU, Philippines - Employees of the Bureau of Immigration in Cebu maybe disgruntled but they have no plans to hold any strike yet.

A source from BI-Cebu, who refused to be named, said that even if they no longer received their overtime pay since January of this year and have not received their salaries from February and March of this year, their operations remained normal.

"Pait kaayo among kahimtang karon diri kay Pebrero ug Marso wala mi nakadawat sa among sweldo. Unya wa na sad mi gihatagan sa among overtime pag Enero pa," said the source.

Due to what happened, the source said that several BI employees especially the younger ones, are now planning to resign.

"Bisan pa sa kapait sa among sitwasyon karon, di mi pwede mag-strike kay unsaon na lang kami baya ang frontliners. Kung mag-strike ming tanan, sigurado dako kaayo ning problema kay kung pananglitan naay foreigner nga mo-renew sa ilang visa unya wa mi, makabayad sila sa penalty," the source said.

To recall, President Rodrigo Duterte amended the BI budget so that profits from the express lane fund go straight to the national treasury.

Before, the fund was used for the overtime pay of the BI regular employees.

The source added that they will just have to wait the outcome of their employees' union Buklod-CID’s continued plea for their woes to be addressed.

"Magpaabot lang sa mi unsay resulta sa Manila. In the meantime, wait and see lang mi," the source added. (FREEMAN)
