Health workers found positive for drug use

CEBU, Philippines -  Two barangay health workers were found positive of drug use during the surprise random drug testing conducted by Cebu City Office on Substance Abuse Prevention in Barangay Malubog and Barangay Babag on Friday.

Out of 70 employees, two were found positive in using drugs in Barangay Babag. Both employees are health workers in Babag Barangay Health Center.

On the other hand, 56 employees in Barangay Malubog who were respondents of the random drug test were found negative; however, 4 employees were not examined.

If the test results of the remaining four employees are negative, then Barangay Malubog will be declared as the seventh drug-free workplace.

Out of the 30 barangays in Cebu City, 6 are already declared as drug-free workplace. These barangays are Budlaan, Taptap, Talamban, Pulangbato, Agsungot and Buhisan.

The surprise random drug testing conducted in 30 barangays has already examined 101 barangay employees with positive results for drug use.

COSAP’s motive in conducting these drug tests is to reduce drug addiction and use both among workers and the youth.

Under the law, any officer or employee found positive of dangerous drug use shall be dealt with administratively, the offense being a ground for suspension or termination, subject to the provisions of the Labor Code and the Civil Service Law.  (FREEMAN)
