Public asked to watch “real scandal”

CEBU, Philippines - A political organization in the University of the Philippines-Cebu, in partnership with Gabriela, yesterday showed a video they contended would counter the sex scandal of a female student from a local university.

The Nagkahiusang Kusog sa Estudyante (NKE) encouraged everyone, especially those who like watching sex videos, to watch the video that they presented yesterday, which shows the “real scandal”.

The three-minute video, entitled “Manila Scandal Part 2”, features a young woman who underwent several troubles, including a suicide attempt, after her sex video was publicized last year.

“Ang tinuod nga scandal mahitabo sa usa ka-victim after na ma-spread ang iyang video. (The real scandal happens to the victim after the video spreads.) The psychological and emotional stress that she have to suffer, mao na ang real scandal,” NKE member April Dyna Gumanao said.

Gumanao pointed out that the victim does not only suffer physical abuse but also the so-called electronic violence against women (E-VAW), which is now rampant considering the current technological advancement.

The counter-scandal video, Gumanao said, can be watched in the social media youtube.com. Gabriela, a known advocate of women’s rights, created the video in July 2012.

In its statement, NKE urged the public to delete the video from their gadgets and refrain from sharing it with anybody.

“This is one way of helping the student redeem herself and move forward. May we not forget that it is still in curing the sickness that we can save the patient rather than letting the sickness complicate,” the statement further read.

Despite the laws that protect women’s rights, violations are still being committed because of the problematic social system, NKE claimed.

“As long as this social system is not changed, no woman in our society is safe from discrimination and violence,” NKE further said.

The group invites the public to “One Billion Rising”, a global event against VAWC at the Ayala Terraces at 3 pm today. — (FREEMAN)
