Modern ethnic Philippine fashion

CEBU, Philippines - The "Mga Likha ni Inay" brand recently presented the latest couture creations of its Philippine Modern Ethnic Collection, highlighting fabulous pieces that are not only born from a sensible amalgam of form and function - but also form a seamless synthesis of indigenous materials and forward-fashion cuts and lines.

Unveiling in Cebu on April 5 at SM City Cebu, the "Mga Likha ni Inay Fashion Show: The Philippine Modern Ethnic Collection" showcased the different fashion pieces and accessories that comprise the brand's Filipiniana and Barong Collection, Ifugao Tribe Collection, Mangyan Tribe Collection, Mindanao T'boli Collection and B'laan Collection.

Taking a progressive stance in finding effective alternatives to fast fashion's jewel tones and chic neutrals, designer Chris Gamo utilized different indigenous fabrics made from materials like the t'nalak from Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, piña cocoon from Lumban, Laguna, and tiger grass from Albay, Bicol, in the creation of form-flattering dresses, elegant eveningwear pieces and formal-leisure wear suits.

More than an example of how ethnic elements can be used in the making of avant-garde creations, “Mga Likha ni Inay's” presented set also illustrated how the use of locally sourced raw materials could produce unique world-class fashion pieces.

"Mga Likha ni Inay" is a brand and marketing program developed by the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development - Business Development Service Foundation Inc.

It reaches out to weavers, capiz makers, jute workers, wood carvers, leather workers, paper molders and more, helping them bring their products to mainstream markets.

With a kiosk expected to be installed in SM City Cebu fairly soon, "Mga Likha ni Inay" is set towards causing beneficial shifts in the local and international fashion scene. (FREEMAN)
