Like most businesses, Beautederm was greatly affected when the pandemic broke in 2020.

“We, as a company, were not spared by the trying times of the health crisis we continue to face. But I am grateful to have a solid and united sales team who worked really hard despite the pandemic so by God’s grace, we somehow managed to stay afloat and carry on with our operations,” said Ms. Rei Anicoche Tan, Beautederm owner and president.

“In terms of sales, there is a bit of a decline but the demand for our products is steady. I could also attribute this to the fact that we have been marketing and selling Beautéderm products online for over a decade now and we have established our own space in the online world aside from the sales that we get from our physical stores.”

What is the challenge continuing this kind of business during the pandemic? “I think it’s complying to a new set of protocols and keeping my staff safe and healthy,” she said. “It was difficult to adjust at first but as the months passed, we were able to adapt.”

Ms. Rei added that they were able to maintain their existing customers and establish a relationship with new ones since most of their marketing efforts are done online.

Why does she think people continue to purchase beauty products even during the pandemic? “Filipinos make it a point to take care of themselves not just in the aspect of physical beauty but in terms of personal hygiene and wellness.”

Based on Ms. Rei’s experience, the beauty business continues to be lucrative.

“The beauté industry, like any other, possess the potential to be lucrative but success always entails hard work, dedication, and many sacrifices such as sleepless nights of planning and conceptualizations. Mistakes are natural but what is important is that we learn from our mistakes, move forward and work even harder until we reach our concept of what is lucrative and successful.”

Contrary to popular belief that females are the biggest customers of beauty products, the clients of Beautéderm cuts across all segments — all genders and social classes.

Ms. Rei added that they have always had male clients but the percentage increased when they introduced a product line exclusively for men.

The adults remain the biggest purchasers since they have spending capacity. “Most of the teens would ask their parents to purchase Beautéderm products for them,” said Ms. Rei.
