CEBU, Philippines -  Five days after a Ceres bus figured in an accident that left two dead and 32 passengers wounded, another road mishap claimed the lives of three sugarcane plantation workers and injured 37 others in the northern Cebu town of Tabogon yesterday morning.

The victims were also mostly survivors of super typhoon Yolanda, which ravaged northern Cebu, including Tabogon, last Nov. 8.

They were on their way to work in neighboring Bogo City and were already in Barangay Ilihan, Tabogon when the cargo truck they were riding fell into a 15-meter ravine.

Authorities identified the dead as Juvelyn Puebla, 20; Leonard Ybañez of Caduawan, Tabogon; and Warren Cañas, 13, who all died on the spot after they got pinned under the truck.

The wounded were identified as Maylord Omonares, Marsing Binabay, Bellano Tul-id, Enda Ybañez, Merlinda Masong, Jeslie Tul-id, Teresa Tuling, Jonel Tul-id, Eugene Sumayang, Leo Amigable, Jason Cogal, Julie Ann Puebla, Maria Billy Puebla, Irene Monesit, Rudy Monisit.

Michelle Sumayang, Kayan Tuling, Gingging Amigable, Gilbert Cogal, Benjie Tul-id, Ruth Albuno, Perla Abayon, Danica Abayon, Juven Puebla, Jhares Ybañez, Violeta Ornopia, Edgardo Escaña, Ailene Motalbo, Loreta Manalic, and seven minors.

Police Officer 3 Epifanio Comedido, case investigator, told The FREEMAN in a telephone interview that the victims were all sugarcane planters.

He said that truck driver Juvy Pedrano, 27, married, of Barangay Caduawan, Tabogon was on his normal routine of picking up the workers from their respective homes in Tabogon and had no inkling of the dreadful event that would unfold.

Comedido said the incident happened while Pedrano was going uphill on their way to Sitio San Antonio, Barangay Binabag, Bogo City around 8 a.m.

Another truck, driven by Norman Monteron, 25, also of Caduawan, tried to overtake the truck Pedrano drove.

Monteron said that when he was about to pass Pedrano's truck by encroaching on the other lane, he saw an oncoming motorcycle, prompting him to immediately swerve right back to his lane.

"He tried to overtake the other truck but met a motorcycle on the opposite lane.  This caused him to turn back to his lane, and in the process hit with his truck's rear the front portion of the truck he tried to overtake," said Comedido in Cebuano.

He said that led Pedrano to loss control of the truck, which veered to the right and tumbled down a gorge 15 meters down the side of the road.

"Loss control, naliso ang head sa truck sa pagka-igo, nabalintong unya natagak," Comendido said.

Both Pedrano and Monteron were unhurt after the accident.

Comendido said that when he reached the site, some of the injured victims were already brought to nearby hospitals in Tabogon and in Bogo City for immediate medical treatment.

He said the dead victims were crushed under the military-style cargo truck that local residents had to help them in retrieving the bodies.

Juvelyn Puebla's father was in a state of shock and cried when he knew that his daughter was one of the fatalities and that his children and his wife were among the injured.

"Nahinabi namo ang amahan, upat ka anak sakay ug ang asawa. Nihilak to ganiha, wala pa gani nakapabarog sa balay kay naigo sa bagyong Yolanda, apil iyang pamilya sa nadisgrasya (We spoke with the father; he had four children and his wife among the victims. He cried and lamented that they have not yet rebuilt their home after Yolanda struck, and how his family figured in an accident)," Comedido said.

He said the victims were set to claim their salary supposedly by the end of the day.

Monteron is currently in the custody of Tabogon Police Station while waiting for the charges to be filed against him.

The incident came less than a week after an allegedly drunk driver of a Ceres bus that was coming from Guihulngan, Negros and on its way to Cebu City lost control of the vehicle Monday morning.

Driver Erwin Gerson lost his wife and his five-year-old daughter, who were seated near him, in the accident.

Yesterday's incident also happened less than a month after a wing van truck, loaded with pallets of beer,  lost its brakes while going downhill and rammed several structures, causing the death of three persons and injuries to 17 others, in Barili, Cebu.-/RHM (FREEMAN)
