Amit misses gold in Saigon

MANILA, Philippines — Reigning world 9-ball queen Rubilen Amit settled for the silver after yielding to world No. 1 Wei Tzu Chien of Chinese-Taipei, 1-2, in the Saigon Women’s 9-Ball Open finale Friday night in Vietnam.
Amit actually got the running start against her Taiwanese rival, winning the first set at 4-1. But Wei countered with 4-3 and 4-2 victories in the next two frames to complete a reverse sweep.
It was the only loss in the tournament for the 43-year-old Pinay.
Amit stamped her class on Japanese Hiraguchi Yuki, 2-1, and Chinese Liu Shasha, 2-0, to cruise to the KO rounds.
She hammered identical 2-0 shutouts over American Savannah Easton in the Last 16, Austrian Jasmin Ouschan in the quarterfinals, and compatriot Camille Buhat in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Carlo Biado relinquished the crown after absorbing a 0-3 loss to Taiwanese rival Ko Ping Chung in the semifinals of the Predator Men’s 10-Ball World Championship yesterday in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ko dominated the first set, 4-1, then clawed back from a 1-3 deficit to steal the second, 4-3, before closing it in the third at 4-2 to advance to the finale.
