Calm before storm

MANILA, Philippines — The FIBA World Cup reels off on Aug. 25 and with less than two weeks to go before Gilas opens its campaign against the Dominican Republic at the Philippine Arena, LA Tenorio said yesterday now more than ever, coach Chot Reyes’ troops must focus only on getting ready for battle during the calm before the storm.
Tenorio, who played on the national squad at the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain, said it’s time for Filipino fans to show their all-out support to Gilas. “Gulatin natin ang mundo at makita ng lahat how wild and passionate we are about basketball,” said Tenorio. “I wouldn’t be surprised if FIBA brings back the World Cup sa atin after they experience our reception. Of course, let’s manage our expectations. All teams are preparing as hard as we are. I’m excited to watch our young players compete and give it their all. We’re playing to win but no matter what happens, the important thing is we play our hearts out, we give our best.”
Tenorio said he’s hoping Gilas will surpass what the 2014 team achieved in Spain where the country booked its first World Cup win in 40 years. “Sana we win at least two games to reach the playoffs at MOA Arena,” he said. “Our goal is to make it to the second round and become the highest Asian finisher so we qualify for the Paris Olympics. It’s not going to be easy. JC (Jordan Clarkson), Kai (Sotto) and AJ (Edu) will help the team compete. But it will take a team effort to win.”
In 2014, Tenorio recalled that captain Jimmy Alapag got everyone on the team to agree not to read or participate in social media during the 42 days away from home to focus on the World Cup. “We were all disciplined, we didn’t read social media at nakatulong,” he said. “We had a good run, we made history. Now, with the World Cup coming, I’m sure the players are excited to go up against NBA players, the best of the best. There’s too much noise everywhere and we shouldn’t be thinking about what’s happening outside our team.” Tenorio said he’ll be in the stands praying and cheering for Gilas in the World Cup. “We’re thankful to SBP, PBA, the MVP and San Miguel groups, sponsors and FIBA for making this happen in our country,” he said. “Let’s make this the best World Cup ever.”
