MANILA, Philippines — The PBA’s dream of bringing back fans to the games got a major boost with Metro Manila mayors recommending fully-vaccinated individuals to be allowed to play and watch contact sports in the capital.

“Maganda para sa liga yan,” commissioner Willie Marcial told The STAR yesterday, referring to the NCR executives’ endorsed policy guidelines on the conduct of contact sports, including requirements for players and fans in organized and unorganized events.

Based on Metro Manila Development Authority Resolution No. 21-28, which is still subject to IATF approval, only “fully-vaccinated adults and minors” can take part as players or spectators but those who are “symptomatic” will be barred.

At the same time, local government units will have the “prerogative to allow or disallow spectators in any contract sport event as the circumstances may require.”

And in line with IATF’s guidelines, indoor sports facilities will only be filled up to 50 percent with outdoor areas at 70 percent while observing minimum public health standards such as wearing of face masks and social distancing.

“Kung ano ang ipapatupad ng gobyerno, okay yan at safe para sa lahat,” said Marcial.

The PBA is set to roll out its 3x3 inaugural on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City with the import-spiced Governors’ Cup being targeted for a Nov. 28 kickoff.

The pro league is seeking to open its doors to a live audience for the first time since the Season 45 Philippine Cup opening game in March last year before the pandemic broke out.

“Magbibigay kami ng promo, like libreng tickets sa mga fans sa selected dates, kung papayagan tayo (with spectators),” said Marcial.
