Gilas seeks repeat vs Thailand

MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas goes for a twin-kill versus Thailand in the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers as the two teams slug it out for the second time tonight in Manama, Bahrain.

After their 93-61 rout of the Thais Friday, coach Jong Uichico’s troops are fancied for a repeat against the Thais who also suffered a nasty beating at the hands of the Indonesians, 76-90, Saturday.

Dwight Ramos, the 20-year-old, 6-5 Ateneo recruit from California, went 7-of-7 from the field and finished with 20 markers in the initial Phl-Thailand tiff.

“We’re happy for his performance, we’ll see next game,” said Uichico.

Justine Baltazar, brothers Juan and Javi Gomez de Liaño, Rey Suerte, Mike Nieto and Isaac Go all came through with significant contributions Friday.

Ramos also piled up seven rebounds, three assists and the same number of steals as Gilas improved to 2-0 (win-loss) in Group A of the qualifiers.

But Ramos may get different defensive treatment from the Thais in the rematch.
