Blaze Spikers win with same old fire
Katherine Bell of Petron delivers a point against Christine Soy Soyud and Marivic Meneses of Generika Ayala in yesterday’s opener.

MANILA, Philippines — Petron reminded everyone that it’s still the reigning champion, ushering in a new era in a convincing a 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 victory over Generika-Ayala in the 2020 Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix opener last night at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Eager to move on from the offseason that saw the departure of key players, the Blaze Spikers leaned on returning import Katherine Bell, who pumped in 17 markers and 17 hits.

Holdovers Rem Palma (11), Ces Molina (5) and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas (5) with new player Lut Malaluan (6) were in their usual forms as Petron took care of their first match under veteran tactician Emil Lontoc.

“It’s a big encouraging win for our players to believe that we can win. Even beforehand, I told them that I have my full trust in their capabilities. They showed that in this game,” said the 70-year-old Lontoc, who took over from now Cignal deputy coach Shaq delos Santos.

Aside from Rhea Dimaculangan, Petron also lost Mika Reyes, Denden Lazaro, Sisi Rondina, Bernadeth Pons, Mela Tunay and Chloe Cortez before the new season unfolded. But it did not seem to bother them in their bid to win a third straight Grand Prix title.

“We’re satisfied with this win. It’s a good start for us especially amidst the criticism from that offseason. That added motivation for us,” added Lontoc after his wards disposed of the Lifesavers in 78 minutes.

Behind Bell, Palma, Maizo-Pontillas and Molina, the Blaze Spikers figured in a tough opening frame, going toe-to-toe until the seasoned quartet displayed proven championship pedigree to take a 25-22 win.
