SBP, PBA to firm up collaboration

MANILA, Philippines — The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will continue to work with the Philippine Basketball Association, keeping their partnership to formulate the best program possible to maintain Gilas Pilipinas’ status as a regular campaigner in the FIBA World Cup.

SBP officials are having  continuous discussions while the PBA board is expected have their own talk on the national team program in their meeting on Sept. 26.

“There will be ongoing discussions. Post-assessment will not be just within SBP. It will also be in collaboration with the PBA because we will have to craft a program that hopefully will work not only for four years but in the next eight years,” said SBP chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan.

“We’ll look at this more from a long-term point of view. As I’ve said, we want to be in the World Cup as a norm moving forward,” added Pangilinan. “What’s the best program? The best framework to do that, that’s something we will need to assess.”

As the host team, Gilas Pilipinas will be competing in its third straight World Cup in 2023.

And it could well still be collaboration between the SBP and the PBA.

“I think the assessment really with the national team has to start first. And we will coordinate and collaborate of course with the PBA,” said SBP president Al Panlilio, also a PBA board member representing the Meralco Bolts.
