Eagles, Scorpions break standoff

As the Blue Eagles looked headed for another rout, the shorthanded Scorpions waged a fightback for the ages, pulling off a 77-74 shock win to force the series jam.

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo looks to recover from the trauma of its humbling loss Tuesday while the eight-man Centro Escolar U side seeks a follow-up to its upset win as the two teams break the 1-1 deadlock in their PBA D-League best-of-five finals at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City today.

As the Blue Eagles looked headed for another rout, the shorthanded Scorpions waged a fightback for the ages, pulling off a 77-74 shock win to force the series jam.

And there’s a series after all.

CEU coach Derrick Pumaren commended the heart of his wards to steal Game Two but reminded his wards not to sit on their laurels as they have not achieved anything other than tying the series.

“We’re happy about that Game Two win but we cannot be too happy. The series is not over. We just tied the series. We only won one game,” said Pumaren.

Completely ripped apart, 66-101, in the series opener, the Scorpions displayed an epic comeback and ended the Eagles’ 10-game winning streak in the tourney.

The Scorpions now brace for the Eagles’ own fightback.
