Laylo runner-up in Myanmar chess

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino Grandmaster Darwin Laylo downed Myanmar’s top player International Master Wynn Zaw Htun to finish runner up in the SOE International Open tournament 2019 in Myanmar Wednesday night.

Laylo, 38, actually ended up tied for first with top seed GM Venkataraman Karthik of India, who beat FIDE Master Pitra Andyka of Indonesia, at 7.5 points but the former yielded the crown to the latter on tiebreak, 52-55.

It was the second straight second-place finish for Laylo, who also wound up second behind IM Haridas Pascua in the Selangor Open in Malaysia early this month.

Laylo, whose campaign in the nine-round tournament was backed by SSC Army Gym director Col. Raymund Dante Lachica, is gearing up for the Asian Individual Chess Championship set June 6-16 in China for a chance to make it back to the World Cup.

“I hope to get the chance to play again in the World Cup,” said Laylo, who made it to the elite event twice in 2007 and 2009 after topping the Asian Individual in Cebu and the Asian Zonal in Vietnam.
