Fancied bets seize control in junior chess

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Daniel Quizon and Kylen Joy Mordido sustained their form and kept the lead in their respective sides in Under-20 division halfway through the National Age Group Chess Championships at Governors’ Hall, Roxas City, Capiz.

Quizon, who won five gold medals and silver in last year’s ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships (AAGCC) and bagged the silver in last month’s Asian Youth Chess Championships in Thailand, was a point ahead of the opposition in boys’ category.

Also a five-gold and a silver medal winner in the AAGCC, Mordido stood half-a-point in the girls division.

Michael Concio, also a five-gold and silver medal winner in the AAGCC, and Jerlyn San Diego, who swept all six gold medals in her category in the AAGCC and a PSA awardee, nursed a half-point edge in the U-14 for boys and girls, respectively.

Al-basher Buto, another PSA awardee and AAGCC five-gold and silver medalist, continued to show the way in the U-8 boys of the event sanctioned and organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and sponsored by the Capiz Provincial Government under Gov. Antonio del Rosario and Philippine Sports Commission.
