Foton to go easy on new import

Channon Thompson made PSL history when she became the first import to replace an active reinforcement midway into the conference.

MANILA, Philippines – Foton will be deploying its new import — Channon Thompson — with extreme caution in the Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga Grand Prix.

Head coach Rommel Abella said they would be very patient and cautious with the prolific Trinidad and Tobago star, especially now that they are in dire need of a win to intensify their bid of clinching one of the four twice-to-beat incentives in the quarterfinal round.

The Tornadoes spent the Lenten break with a couple of days rest on Thursday and Friday before doing some conditioning drills on Saturday and Sunday in preparation for a gigantic battle with Cignal on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

A victory over the HD Spikers would give the Tornadoes a fighting chance of clinching a twice-to-beat edge as they have only Generika-Ayala and F2 Logistics to overcome to realize that goal.

Abella said Thompson was limited to light workouts in her first few days in the country.

“She’s a little bit under the weather,” said Abella.

“We’re trying to be cautious with her in training so she would be at her best on Tuesday. At this point, every win is very important. We have to beat Cignal if we want to chase that (twice-to-beat) advantage in the quarterfinals.”

Thompson will be coming in with a mountain of expectations.

The 24-year-old seasoned international campaigner made history when she became the first import to replace an active reinforcement midway into the conference.

But Abella doesn’t see any problem with that.

“She had a good bonding session with the team before Brook left,” he said. “Brooke and Channon talked and discussed how to lead Foton to the title. So everything is good. She’s ready to pick up where Brooke left off.”

Abella added that Thompson knows that all eyes will be on her and it’s up to her to prove her worth.

“She already knows it,” Abella said.

“We’re not putting any pressure on her. As much as possible, we want to temper our expectations because it might put too much pressure (on her).”

“We just want her to go there and play her game.”
