MANILA, Philippines — The BanKo Perlas Spikers have tapped Ariel dela Cruz and Michelle Carolino to take over from former coach Nai Muhammed of Thailand with an eye of a better performance in this season’s Premier Volleyball League starting on April 1.
Dela Cruz was a former coach of the National U women’s volleyball team while Carolino is a former national team mainstay who last saw action for the Army Lady Troopers in the PVL a few years back and will make her coaching debut.
Under Muhammed, BanKo came close to making both the 2017 Reinforced and Open Conferences semifinals last year before winding up fifth in both.
And BanKo Perlas management hopes the coaching change could change things for the better.
“Our coaches starting this PVL season are Ariel dela Cruz and Michelle Carolino and we’re optimistic the team will have a better year,” said Charo Soriano, one of the founders of the Beach Volleyball Republic that handles BanKo Perlas, on Wednesday.
BanKo is just one of the PVL teams making coaching changes after Open Conference titlist Bali Pure lost Roger Gorayeb to PLDT and Pocari Sweat promoted Rico de Guzman to manager and appointed Air Force’s Jasper Jimenez as mentor.
The team will keep the same core from last year, which included skipper Suzanne Roces, Kat Bersola, Amanda Villanueva, Jem Ferrer, Ella de Jesus, Gizelle Tan, Nicole Tiamzon, Mae Tajima and Amy Ahomiro.
Soriano also added they’re still on the verge of signing up players from the UAAP but will make the official announcement only after the UAAP season concludes in May.
