MANILA, Philippines — Lyceum of the Philippines University’s CJ Perez is more concerned winning the 93rd NCAA basketball title than the MVP award.
But there is a big chance he could end up with both.
Perez, playing his one and only season with LPU as he has plans of joining the pros, is one of the statistical leaders after the first round of elimination and one of main reasons the Pirates have zoomed to the top with a pristine 9-0 (win-loss) record.
In nine games, Perez has led all scorers with an average of 18.6 points a game and tied with three others at second in steals with a norm of 1.6 on top of his other counting stats — 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists.
Perez is being challenged by San Beda’s 1-2 punch in Robert Bolick and Javee Mocon.
Bolick is the league’s assists leader with an average of 4.7 dimes a game and piled up norms of 13.6 points and 4.7 boards while Mocon has equally impressive numbers with averages of 12 points, 9.9 caroms, 3.6 assists and almost a steal and a block a game.
Perez though stressed winning the title his biggest priority.
“I’m thinking more of helping the team win a championship,” said Perez. “If I win the MVP, that would be just a bonus.”
