Not used to pre-fight limelight, Torres can’t wait for ONE debut

MACAU — If Jomary Torres had her way, she’d rather fight in the cage rather than do interviews.
Talking to the press for the first time in her life, the lone Filipina in ONE Championship’s “Kings and Conquerors” card is overcome with jitters — not brought by her upcoming foe Rika Ishige but by the journalists around her.
“Whew … Kinakabahan ako, kahapon pa,” she conceded. “‘Di ko talaga ito inaasahan. Kasi sa Pinas, wala namang ganito. Dito lang. First time lang — na may interview, na may picture-picture, may video. First time ko talaga.”
The 21-year-old Torres won’t be having a cakewalk to her first victory in the promotion as Ishige is known to lean on many fighting disciplines — aikido and muay thai, to name some.
“Ako naman, gagawin ko lahat nang makakaya ko kahit na si Rika,” Torres said of her assignment this Saturday at the Cotai Arena here.
“Basta kakayanin ko para lang matalo ko si Rika para tuloy-tuloy ‘yung [mga] laban ko din,” she offered. “Para always din na makapasok ako sa ONE Championship (cards).”
Torres is one of the three Pinoys seeing action in the undercard of the double-header.Her compatriots are Team Lakay’s former title contender Joshua Pacio and MMA fixture Eric Kelly, who will both take on Japanese foes.
“Sabi lang ni coach Rene (Catalan), focus lang ako sa gagawin ko,” Torres, who fights out of Catalan Fighting Systems said. “Huwag magisip ng kung anu-ano.”“Focus lang daw ako sa strikes ko dahil medyo grappling [ang specialty ni Rika],” she closed.
