San Beda stuns Arellano in NCAA chess
MANILA, Philippines – San Beda pulled off the rug from under reigning back-to-back champion Arellano U, 3-1, over the weekend to stay on top after four rounds in the 92nd NCAA seniors chess competition at the Jose Rizal Gym.
Alcon John Datu and Bryan Barcelon trounced Carlo Caranyagan and Joshua Arias on the second and fourth boards, respectively, to help seal the win and the solo lead for the Lions 14.5 points.
Mari Joseph Turqueza and McDominique Lagula drew with Kyz Llantada and Don Tyrone delos Santos on the first and third boards to complete the triumph.
Lyceum of the Phl U smashed St. Benilde, 3-1, to stay at second with 12.5 points while Letran overpowered Perpetual Help, 3.5-.5, to move up to third spot with 11.5 points.
The Chiefs skidded to No. 4 with 11 points.
In the juniors' division, Letran blanked Perpetual Help, 4-0, on wins by Christian Mark Daluz, Melito Ocsan, Jr., Eric Robert Yap and Alexis Anne Osena to zoom to the top with 13 points, 1.5 ahead of San Beda.
San Beda lost a piece of the lead after eking out just a 2.5-1.5 win over Arellano U.
