MANILA, Philippines – Armed with a two-week training, the Gilas cadet team left for Bangkok yesterday to compete in the 2016 SEABA Stankovic Cup beginning Sunday.
Coach Nash Racela will have at his disposal five holdovers from the 2015 SEAG champion team and core players from his FEU squad in the UAAP.
Racela opted to get players familiar with his system due to limitation of time in training for the SEABA joust serving as the qualifier for the coming Asia Cup slated in Tehran, Iran.
Troy Rosario, Kevin Ferrer, Mark Belo and Roger Pogoy, part of the Gilas Pilipinas training pool for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament at the MOA Arena in July, banner the Gilas cadet team in Bangkok that includes Almond Vosotros, Russel Escoto, Ken Holmqvist, Raymar Jose, Chris Tolomia, Jiovani Jalalon, Von Pessumal and Jonas Raphael Tibayan.
The cadet squad opens its SEABA Stankovic Cup campaign versus Malaysia tomorrow. Next up for Team Phl is Singapore Wednesday, Indonesia Thursday then Thailand Friday. The gold-medal game is set May 28.
Rosario, Belo, Vosotros, Jalalon and Ferrer are holdovers from the 2015 SEA Games team of coach Tab Baldwin.
The Gilas Pilipinas coach urged the cadet team to “play with pride and purpose.”
“Here’s wishing the Gilas cadets a successful SEABA tourney and a safe trip,” Baldwin said.
