Salceda says Albay ready to host Palaro
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – After hosting topnotch foreign and local riders in the Le Tour de Filipinas, Albay gears up for the next big sports in the province, the 2016 Palarong Pambansa slated April 10-16.
Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said preparations for the staging of the annual grassroots meet featuring more than 10,000 student-athletes, coaches and chaperones from all the 18 regions are well on track.
“We’re about 90 percent ready at this point, (with two months to go), ” Salceda said.
The province that houses the near-perfect Mayon Volcano is spending P240-million to P260-million to prep up venues such as Albay Provincial Sports Center and Albay Astrodome as well as billeting facilities of the delegates.
Salceda said he expects the Bicol contingent to give a good account of itself against more favored rivals like those from powerhouse NCR.
“Last year, we won 12 gold medals and improve our rankings from 12th to seventh. We hope to match or surpass that this year,” he said.
Over the weekend, Albay opened its roads to the last two stages of the Le Tour de Filipinas won by Kazakh Oleg Zemlyakov of Vino 4-Ever. This was, according to the exec, in line with their “sports tourism” thrust.
