Batang Gilas tame Red Lions for 1st win in Fr. Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines -- The Batang Gilas, the Mapua Red Robins and the Xavier School Golden Stallions turned back their foes over the weekend in the 13th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the Arellano gymnasium in Legarda, Manila.

Jonas Tibayan fired 16 points while Dave Ildefonso shot 15 for the national youth U-16 side as they repulsed the San Beda Red Lions, 78-71, to pick up their first win in two games in Group A of the senior division.

Enzo Serrano tallied 26 points for the Red Robins in their 71-60 demolition of the University of Perpetual Help Junior Altas in Group B of the junior division.

The Tyler Tio-led Golden Stallions leaned on the free throws to escape with a 91-88 win over the National University Bullpups in another Group B action.

The Red Robins, who limited the Junior Altas to nine points in the third period to take a 52-43 edge, and post their second straight triumph.

Tio made 19 points, including seven free throws in the last six seconds which carried the Golden Stallions their third consecutive triumph.

Tibayan and Samjosef Belangel scored four charities in the last 31.1 seconds, allowing Gilas to pick up their first triumph in two matches in Group A.

In other games, the Arellano Chiefs notched their second straight win, stopping University of Perpetual Help-Molino, 82-69, in another senior match.

The San Beda Red Lions, behind Franz Abuda with 11 points, trounced Mary the Queen College, 83-68.

The San Sebastian Staglets waylaid Philippine Cultural College, 57-45,
