AFF Suzuki Cup, Group A Preview

SINGAPORE — Group A of this edition of the Suzuki Cup poses one or two questions that will be really interesting to watch.

While group B has three of the powerhouses, Group A has an emerging force called the Azkals (street dogs), from the Philippines.

They will play alongside host and three-time champion Thailand, 2008 champion Vietnam and Myanmar.

Myanmar qualified for the tournament as they always seem to do as champions but they are optimistic about their chances of getting through the group stage. I can’t really see that happening, as I still believe they have a lot to do to catch up with the other teams in the group.

Vietnam goes into this event having shuffled their pack as well. There is a new crop of players coming through and are desperate to make an impression on the international stage.

With some experienced players there, Vietnam could go all the way again but they will need their key experienced players to stay fit and not get injured.

Thailand always seems to be an enigma. You just don't know what you are going to get from them. After winning three out of the first four editions, they have somehow been left wanting for success.

It is strange as the Thai league is an emerging strong league and the players there are of quality. Home advantage will help but they will not want to be dumped out of the competition in the group stage like the last tournament, so I am expecting a bit more from them this time.

Finally I can touch on the Azkals. The Philippines have been scouring the planet looking for players that are eligible to play for them and they have found a few very good players. This is the team that could upset the group and turn it on its head.

10 of the squad play in Europe and one in the USA. Their experience added to the local flair and ability will only go to enhance the strength of the team. After losing in the semi finals last time, Michael Weiss will be looking to take the team one stage further this year. I believe he can.
