Martin fires nine treys, powers UST past CKSC

-

MANILA, Philippines - Prince Martin buried nine triples for a record 40 points as University of Santo Tomas trounced erstwhile unbeaten Chiang Kai Shek College, 75-63, even as defending champion Hope Christian High School gained a piece of the lead with a 66-57 win over Adamson in the FCBL-Freego Cup at the Buddhacare Gym in QC Tuesday.

Martin waxed hot from almost all angles to post the highest individual score in the tournament.

Martin, who was named Freego Best Player of the Game, was at his best in the third where he knocked in five treys as the Tiger Cubs snapped a two-game skid for a 2-3 record in the event sponsored by Smart.

Hope Christian, which finished runner-up to Chiang Kai Shek College in the Tiong Lian Championship this year, easily dispatched Adamson for a 4-1 record to tie Chiang Kai Shek.

Mapua, meanwhile, stunned Ateneo, 78-72, behind Ronnel Villasenor (21 points), Justin Serrano (15 points), Irvin Guzman and Sonny Coprado (seven points).

The win was Mapua’s second against four losses in the event backed by Hapee Toothpaste, Fruitas Fruit Shake, Nikon Home Appliances, Colt Commercial, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Fern-C and Insular Square (Cebu).

In the other game, STI, with Fernando Ngolong firing 14 points, notched its second straight win by downing reigning UAAP champion National University, 75-64.

Aside from Martin, also emerging as Freego Best Player of the Game were Villasenor of Mapua, Clint Dolinguez of Hope Christian, and Ngolong of STI.
