Tigers, Archers dispute women's football crown

MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University tangle in a winner-take-all dispute for the UAAP Season 74 women’s football crown today at the Ateneo field.

The top seed Tigresses and the No. 2 Lady Archers take the pitch at 9 a.m. with UST gunning for a first title since 2008 and DLSU sighting a first diadem since 2009 and ninth overall.

DLSU set the you-or-me duel after edging twice-to-beat UST in penalty shootout, 4-3, at the start of the finals a week ago.

“We were able to overcome a lot of injuries this season and I just hope we can win again,”said DLSU coach Hans Smit, underscoring the need to come up with a good gameplan against a tough rival like UST.

“UST is very strong at the offensive and defensive end. I’m sure they will make the adjustment (in Game 2),” he added.

The Tigresses look to cop the final plum of the season as a fitting cap to UST’s successful campaign for a record 39th UAAP general championship.

“We can’t allow La Salle to have more possessions,” said Tigresses mentor Rozano Estrabon, aiming to steer UST to its second women’s football title.
