UST rules UAAP fencing
MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas clinched the men’s overall fencing championship in the UAAP season in the Blue Eagle Gym recently, with the University of the East and University of the Philippines coming in second and third, respectively.
The Growling Tigers claimed the gold in the epee finals with a 26-45 card over the the fighting Maroons, and silver in the foil and saber categories for a successful defense of their UAAP crown
Epee player Harris Joseph Orendain, a 19-year old junior at the College of Commerce of UST, was named Most Valuable Player with a double gold.
Rounding up the champion UST epee team are Ryan Angelo Lopez, Arnel Bernal and Aron Baldazo. Coach was Arman Bernal.
Other UST fencers are Charles da Jose, Paul Alba, Jose Cagalingan, Jake Jimenez (foil); Jhan Catama, Sydney Nogodula, Donnie Navarro, and Ding Raguin (saber). Coaches were Buenvenido Orlanez and Ricardo Fuenzalida.
Felix Silbor, the university’s athletic moderator, led the contingent at the award ceremony in Ateneo. The UST women’s team was awarded first runner-up honors.
