Luanzon energizes Bacchus

- Joey Villar -

Bacchus Energy Drink leaned on the explosive game of Christian Luanzon as the Raiders ripped the Toyota Otis Sparks, 68-60, yesterday to barge into the win column in the PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.

Luanzon, a former UST standout with a brief stint with Alaska Milk in the pro league, erupted for a season-high 32 points, carrying the Raiders to their first win in four starts.

Harbour Centre displayed torrid shooting to rip Burger King, 83-72, and stay unbeaten in four matches. The Whoppers fell to their second loss in five outings.

“We’re treating all our games now as do-or-die after we lost our first three games,” said Bacchus coach Lawrence Chongson.

Luanzon pumped in a conference high seven triples including six straight in a stretch bridging the third and fourth quarters.

He beat the buzzer in the third quarter with a heave from midcourt line then had his biggest trey with a little over a minute to go to all but settle the outcome of the game.

“I thank God for giving me strength to help the team win,” said Luanzon.

“Luanzon played huge in this game,” said Chongson.

Nat Cruz, a former Mapua Cardinal who drifted in provincial leagues before finding his way to the PBL, backed up Luanzon with 12 points.

Erwin Sta. Maria and Erick Rodriguez scored 13 points apiece to pace the Sparks, who obviously missed the services of JV Casio and RJ Jazul, who were recalled by their collegiate teams. Casio plays for La Salle in the UAAP while Jazul is a Letran mainstay in the NCAA.

Toyota Otis suffered a fourth straight loss this conference and sixth overall dating back to its semifinal showdown with Harbour Centre last conference.

The Raiders made a decisive move in the third canto with Luanzon and Cruz providing the spark.

Earlier, Fritz Bauzon sizzled with 25 points as the Pharex Medics smothered the RP Youth quintet, 106-73, for their third win in four outings.
