Maple wood cage flooring, anyone?

- Joey Villar -

Action Floor Systems, an American-based manufacturer of maple wood basketball courts, and Specicon Philippines, Inc. (SPI), a company specializing in constructing sports facilities, recently forged a partnership that should make the two a big player in basketball court-making industry.

Action Floor Systems International representative David Leggate and SPI marketing manager Merwin Castelo formalized the partnership making the latter the country’s official distributor of maple hardwood products for courts not only used in basketball but other sports as well.

“We are doing 250,000 square meters of maple-made courts every year in 44 countries and we’re happy to venture here in the Philippines,” said Leggate after sealing the deal with top SPI officials.

Castelo, a former Philippine Basketball Association player, said their partnership with Action Floor Systems should make them a major player in the industry of constructing facilities for basketball, the country’s biggest pastime.

“We’re excited at the prospect of constructing level one maple wood floors in the country,” said Castelo.

Based in Mercer, Wisconsin, Action provides wide-ranging sports floor options for an equally broad customer base worldwide where their premium, solid hard maple floors are highly preferred for its performance and durability.

Maple, grown exclusively in America’s northern woods, is the finest-grained, best grade available.

Leggate said they are also the exclusive American supplier of the finest European synthetic polyurethane athletic surface named Herculan, a totally solvent-free and featuring the industry’s first water-based top coat used as a durable, cost effective solution for many applications.

SPI is now negotiating with several schools interested to construct their own maple courts recognized by no less than the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and DIN, a known German testing group.

“Our maple floors are all top of the line with rubber padding, all made of natural rubber. This makes the court shock absorbent, which helps prevent players from absorbing injuries,” said Leggate.

Leggate said they’re implementing three systems, the top end system, the budget system and the system in the middle – all catering the preference of the client.
